Application for Nomination as a Candidate for the NCSS Board of Directors or NCSS Vice President
NCSS is accepting applications for nomination as a candidate for the NCSS Board of Directors and NCSS Vice President.
Instructions
- Complete the online candidate information and submit at least 3 references. Make sure to notify your references they should send their reference to nominations@ncss.org (preferred) or US mail to

Silver Spring, MD 20910by June 1. At least one of your references should be a person who has worked closely with you on social studies or NCSS activities. References should complete BOTH the check off boxes and submit a written comment.
If you are a candidate for Vice President, at least one reference must be someone who has served with you as an elected member of the board of directors. At least one reference should be from a person in a state other than your own. In order to be eligible as a candidate for vice president, a person must have completed a full elected term on the board of directors before assuming office.
- Provide a 200 word biographical sketch in a narrative format that includes both personal and professional information. Include experiences you have had at the local, state, and national levels that have prepared you for this office. If you are nominated, this will appear on the Candidate Data Sheet that is mailed with the ballot and included in the House of Delegates Packet.
Provide a separate response to the following question. (200 word limit for each response.) Significant Issue. What is the most significant issue currently confronting social studies education, and how would you confront this issue? (note: if you are nominated, this will appear on the Candidate Date Sheet that is mailed with the ballot and included in the House of Delegates Packet. 200 word limit.

References
Provide the Nominations and Elections Committee with at least three references for your candidacy for Board of Directors. It is your responsibility to distribute a reference form to your references. Evaluation forms may be sent directly from references to NCSS.Download Reference Form
Failure to follow the application process may jeopardize your candidacy.
Completed applications must be submitted by June 1, 2009.
Responsibilities of NCSS Board Members
Persons elected by the membership to serve on the National Council for the Social Studies Board of Directors must assume the responsibility to represent the various needs and interests of different educational groups/levels across the social studies community. Members are elected to serve on the Board of Directors for a threeyear term. In order to effectively fulfill this role, members of the board should plan:
- To attend regular Board of Directors meetings September, at the annual conference, February/March and May (if scheduled). NCSS pays travel expenses for the September, February/March and May meetings, and 1 night hotel and per diem for the annual conference meeting.
- To conduct efficiently the business of National Council for the Social Studies; serve on committees of the board as assigned. Committee work done by email, conference call or at board meetings and the annual conference.
- To serve as liaisons to NCSS committees and affiliate councils and maintain regular contact with committee and affiliate leaders.
- To review and analyze policy issues and make recommendations to the Executive Committee and full Board of Directors.
Vice President
In order to be eligible as a candidate for president-elect or vice president, a person must have completed a full elected term on the board of directors before assuming office
Persons elected as vice president are inline to become NCSS President and serve a total of 4 years on the board of directors: 1 year as vice president, 1 year as presidentelect, 1 year as president, and 1 year as past president. The vice president shall assume such duties as the president or board of directors shall specify. If a vacancy occurs in the office of president-elect, the vice president shall become the president elect. (Constitution, Article II, Sec. 3) Chairs the Endorsements and Special Projects Committee. - Is a member of the Executive Committee.
- Is a voting ex officio member of the Publications Committee.
- Is a member of the Personnel Committee.
- Is a member of the Annual Conference Program Planning Committee.
- Is the board liaison to the communities and the associated groups,
